Primary Care 101 Course launching in late June. Sign up for our alpha cohort by May 31.
This past weekend we assembled a fantastic group of thinkers together in the mountains of Virginia for our Spring Retreat. Special thanks to Milliman Inc. for sponsoring the event and helping us select our retreat theme of Defining Value in Primary Care.
Dustin and Fritz from Milliman Inc. led us in a workshop where they taught us how to think like actuaries. We explored how to evaluate employer expenses, which levers direct primary care arrangements could pull on to reduce overall costs to employers, and how to value the per member per month fee. Phil Eskew, DO, JD, MBA joined us virtually and chimed in with his experience.
Jay Parkinson, MD, MPH joined us virtually from California. He shared his background and journey building multiple startups. We had a robust discussion over his views of primary care and the problems he’s currently tackling.
The legendary Eric Bricker, MD came straight from working the field on his farm in Texas to jump right into a deep dive on employer sponsored health care. We explored trends, predictions, motivations and got a masterclass in how employer plans work (Here's a 101-level overview).
Jonathan Bush joined us from his own retreat with his family. His VP of Business Operations & Finance Jason Bent also tuned in. We discussed Zus Health and the potential of the product for primary care. There was an interesting line of conversation about EMR data vs. claims data.
Paulius and I enjoy meeting interesting people and having thought provoking conversations with them. Our retreats allow us to bring together some of our favorite people to one place for deeper conversations and to build connections across our network. We plan to continue hosting invite-only retreats and are looking at late September for our next one. Feel free to reach out if you are interested in sponsoring. Sponsors help us take our retreats to the next level and we curate attendees and content based on sponsor interests.
We’ve compiled high yield retreat insights for our paid subscribers below.

Primary Care
Primary care is responsible for tens of millions of dollars in referrals. Affecting just a small percent could yield a couple million in savings. Proving these savings is incredibly difficult.
Primary care currently has value until the point of referral. Improving care coordination where the primary care team can follow the patient to the point of referral and back to primary care is an important part of a reinvented primary care model.
